Safety Education

Safety and Wellness is a Core Value of our organization - we take responsibility for our personal safety, the safety of our co-workers, customers and communities. We regularly extend our commitment to safety beyond the work environment into the communities we serve, by providing electrical safety training for school-age children and community organizations.

Contractors and fire personnel receive electrical safety training to ensure they meet the same high standards of electrical safety as Milton Hydro employees.

Milton Hydro sponsors an informative and dynamic electrical safety and conservation education program that teaches elementary school children how to use electricity safely and wisely.

Trained Electricity Safety and Conservation specialists offer two age-appropriate presentations. “Wires”, the safety puppet, delivers safety and conservation messages to children from JK to grade 4. The presentation to children in grades 5 through 8 includes more detail and uses a variety of teaching aids including an electrified display of a miniature village. At the end of the presentation, each student receives a colourful and engaging activity handout that they can take home and share with their family.

Milton Hydro Educates Local Students on Electrical Safety and Conservation

The safety and well-being of our community, especially its youngest members, is a key focus of our educational programming. We have partnered with Electricity Safety and Conservation to provide age-appropriate electrical safety presentations at local public and Catholic schools in Milton. These programs educate students about the importance of electricity safety, both at home and outdoors, to ensure that Milton’s youth have the information they need to make safe choices.

Engaging and Age-Appropriate Programs

The education sessions are split into two distinct segments, one for younger children (JK to grade 3) and the other aimed at older students (grades 4 to 8) and cover a variety of topics including:

  • Home Safety: Understanding the risks of electrical hazards in the household.

  • Outdoor Safety: Recognizing dangers around utility poles, towers, and substations.

  • Energy Conservation: Learning simple ways to reduce energy consumption and understand the importance of sustainability.

Through practical and fun experiments, key safety messages are reinforced. Two of the most popular demonstrations are the:

  • High Line Hazard: An electrified display of a miniature town showcasing 14 potential electrical accidents.

  • Electrified Dill Pickle: Demonstrates the dangers of electricity by lighting up a darkened room and showing how an electrical shock can affect the human body.
